The story behind the work

Life is fleeting — and what better than to depart transcending into what one loves? Is our mission not precisely what we love most? There comes a moment of reflection when we know life is finite; not when we are barely children, for the end looks so distant back then.

During this painting I went through a sedentary spell from painting shut inside my studio for many days without going out to exercise. I confess I neglected my diet somewhat back then, around 2013-2014, while living for a year in Bogotá — to the point that when I took a photograph of myself I noticed some rolls on my abdomen, falling short of the stereotype of the model with a sculpted body and defined abs. But I am a painter; that was my reality at the time. Was it not the truth?

My essence was in my palette and in my violin, in my dreaming mind. I needed to exercise and stop neglecting that part of myself. I only wanted to tell the truth: that was me. And someday my spirit will turn into those spiritual forms I paint so often, with or without shape — we do not know. Is there anything after death? I do not know, but if there is something it has to be good. What we do know is that we are energy, and energy is neither created nor destroyed, only transformed. What we are certain of is that existence comes to our physical body and simply tells us: it is time.
