Before words, we were already painting
On a cave wall, tens of thousands of years ago, someone mixed ochre with fat and left the outline of a hand. They could not write and had no audience. Even so, they felt the need to say: I was here, this I saw, this I feared. We have not stopped since.
Art is the first language humanity had, and it is still the most exact for what does not fit in a sentence: grief, desire, joy that cannot be explained. A painting does not transmit an idea; it transmits a temperature. Whoever looks at it feels the pulse of the hand that painted it.
Today an image can be produced in seconds. A painting takes months, sometimes years: layers that dry, decisions corrected, matter that goes wrong and is begun again. That delay is not a flaw in the method. It is the value of the work: what was made slowly keeps the time it was given.
